Downgrade iPhone firmware 2.0 to 1.4

14 Jul

Ok, I am stupid enough to upgrade my iPhone firmware from 1.4 to 2.0 via iTunes. So it took me 2 full days to figure out how to bring my iPhone back to life. Here is how I did.

You absolutely need iTunes 7.5 to restore your firmware 1.4 . I don’t want to mess up with my iTunes on my Mac (of course, because of all my precious music) so I just D/L iTunes 7.5 Windows version and run on Parallel Desktop.

  • On Windows, when you connect your iPhone to iTunes 7.5, it will tell you to restore it. (If you first connect your iPhone with firmware 2.0 to Windows, it might say that your phone is not compatible with this version of iTunes. Dont’ worry about this message, just close the popup)
  • Press Shift + Restore (Option+Restore on Mac) and select 1.4 firmware.
  • When finish, you should get 1015 error (if you don’t try again). Don’t worry about the error. Close your iTunes, the iPhone will stuck in recovery mode.
  • Use iBrickr to kick it out of recovery state.
  • I have to restore 2 times in order to kick it out of recovery mode.
  • This is the most important!!! YOU HAVE TO DOWNGRADE BASE BAND FROM 04.05.04_G to 04.04.05_G
  • I used ZiPhone patch newest version to downgrade baseband (I tried many methods on the internet, none of them work for me)
  • Once you downgrade baseband you should get signal even though you did not do any jailbreak, activate or unlock.
  • Now you can use any method you want to unlock the phone. I used ZiPhone on mac to do everything.

Now I have to keep my iTunes 7.5 on Windows parallel just incase I mess up anything again because now we know that 7.7 have some kind of hacking protection.

UPDATE : iClarified has a very nice tutorial plus video instraction to downgrade the baseband now.

UPDATE2: The Dev-Team released PawnageTool 2.1 which can easily Jailbreak/Activate/Unlock 2.0 firmware. The nice tutorial can be found at iClarified

I’m trying to downgrade my iPhone 2G from 2.0 to 1.4 after stupidly upgrading and then realising I couldn’t unlock it afterwards.

However when I connect the iPhone.. using windows XP with iTunes 7.5 it displays a popup message telling me that I need to upgrade iTunes to 7.7 to use this iPhone.

What am I doing differently to you?

    Cheers

Don’t worry about iTunes showing the popup. Just close the popup and open the iTunes again. If iTunes can’t see your iPhone again, connect in recovery mode (hold down home+power until it off then release power button but still hold home button. Wait until iTunes detect iPhone). Hope this help.

Aaaaah, thank GOD!! I thought 7.7 had bricked my phone permanently.

    I hope this works.

  • T

How do you select Press Shift + Restore and select 1.4 firmware.
I have tried this and get a error message from the apple update server can not be contacted?

  • Clancy

It worked. I reimaged to 1.1.4 with iTunes 7.6, used the utility to delete the baseband, reimaged one more time. The second time I didn’t even get the 1015 error!

    After that iLiberty+ worked perfectly.

    THIS SAVED MY ASS!!

Seriously.. saved my ass.. so hard..

  • Lazarpandar

    That, and READ THE README

its important, I was scared I bricked my iPhone for a second there

  • delspit

Perfect!! Tks a lot!! It works!!

  • Grace

    Please help!!
I also updated my itunes and iphone. Now im stuck!! I have downloaded itunes 7.5 onto my mac and removed 7.7 but now it wont even recognize the iphone. I have tried it on a windows and I just get the message you all got saying I need to upgrade to 7.7 then it wont show the iphone. I have tried going in to recovery mode like you said with no success. My iphone is just constantly showing an image of the itunes logo with an arrow pointing upward with a USB below it. Any ideas anyone? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, Grace

If you connect do the recovery mode right on iTunes 7.5, the iTunes should be able to see the iPhone.

OK, try this. Connect your iPhone to iTunes 7.5 with iTunes logo and cable plugging in on it. Then hold down home+power together until the screen goes off then release power but still holding home button. After 5 second, iTunes should say that your iPhone is detected and need to restore.

  • Grace

    Thanks….
I have managed to get it into recovery mode and it has found it on my mac itunes. However, I now have the error ‘Software for this iphone is not currently available. Make sure you have the latest version of itunes and try again’
    Any ideas again?!!

If you connect to iTunes on your mac you have to use Option + Restore instead of Shift+ Restore when you want to select firmware.

  • Grace

God I am so bad on computers can u tell?!! lol. Do u mean the options when u clikc view > view options? If so, it is like blacked out so I cant click it.

  • http://www.kerdsri.com admin

In mean on step 2, when iTunes see you iPhone and asking to restore. You have to use combination key (Option+Restore or Shift+Restore) to choose your desired firmware otherwise iTunes will use firmware that store on your system.

If you can’t click restore, I guess you have to re-enter recovery mode again.

  • Grace

OK, im with you….thanks for your patience!! In my files, I can only find ipod 1.4 restore. Is that right? Thank you so much for helping me!!

  • http://www.kerdsri.com admin

No worries mate, I’ve been there for 2 full days without phone. If you download 1.4 firmware from my link above, you should see the file name “iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw”. You should select this file to restore it.

    You should try this link
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1504
,it has a very good instruction with heap of pictures.

  • Grace

I feel like such a pain!! lol. I have downloaded that, and looked on that website u advised. However, although the zip file is called Phone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw, there are no actual programs inside the folder named that. Also, none of them have that logo as seen on iclarified which shows a restore file. If that makes sense? so yet again, I am stuck! Please help….again! lol x

Ey mate, I think I know your problem now. You cannot use Safari to download that firmware because Safari will extract it to the folder. Try using Firefox to download it. It should have exact name and extension shown above.

  • Grace

The iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (20)

  • Grace

were working! just udating it. fingers crossed!

  • Grace

1 more question!! will iliberty automatically downgrade my base band?

  • Grace

    Hi,

I have done everything as said above and the phone is working with my sim. However, I cant get any signal and I know it works as it is the same sim I had in there before I updated to 2.0. Any ideas?

    Many thanks

Article was great. Although I had difficulty resetting the baseband at first, I was finally able to get ZiPhone to stop giving me runtime errors during the process (I used a different pc, go figure). Also, I had to use the 1.1.3 firmware since the 1.1.4 wouldn’t load – I kept getting the unknow error (1) in iTunes. After I loaded 1.1.3 I reconnected the iPhone to the pc where the profile for the device was initially saved. After restoring the profile iTunes asked if I wanted to upgrade to 1.1.4. I did that, but the phone displayed invalid SIM connect to iTunes, blah, blah, yada again. I figured that all I needed to do was re-jailbreak the phone again (I used iLiberty to do this). After breaking out of jail once again, I was able to sync the phone to the user’s contacts and calendar using iTunes, no problem. I told the user (which is the owner of my company) that we will need to wait until the dev team releases a stable jailbroken copy of the firmware before trying to load the new version again. He’s pretty anxious to have the Exchange features operational.

Grace, you’re so close now. If you don’t have signal, it means that your baseband is 04.05.04_G. You need to download Ziphone patch from link in my post to downgrade baseband. Once you run the program, you’ll get the signal back.

I have been searching, and searching, and searching for a solution. And until now, I was going to give up. downgraded baseband was awesome! And if you follow the steps… it will work.

    Thanks!!

  • Grace

I thought that was the problem but I keep getting ‘permission denied’ on kiphone. Do you know how I stop this from happening? x

  • Grace

This is the exact message I get:
    ZiPhone v2.3 by Zibri. http://www.ziphone.org
    Source code available at: http://www.iphone-elite.org

    Loading zibri.dat.
    ppc

  • http://www.kerdsri.com admin

Grace you have to download ZiPhone patch from here

    http://iphone-freak.com/en/page1/page1.html

It’s different from normal ZiPhone from Zibri

  • Grace

thats what im using I think. The top of the screen of the program says
‘ziphone patched by kimrek (visit us at http://www.iphone-forums.de)’

    That the right/wrong one? x

  • Grace

just tried downloading it again from your link and still getting permission denied.

  • Grace

I have done it!!!!! Thank you so much!!! xxxx

  • http://www.kerdsri.com admin

It’s not the same Grace. The link to download ZiPhone Patch is a rapidshare. If you get ‘permission denied’. It means that you have problem with rapidshare. If you still have problem with downloading, I can put it somewhere else for you.

  • Grace

I have done it. Managed to get it to work on my dads computer. All I want to know now is, Am I ok to download itunes 7.7 again but not update the iphone to 2.0 or do I need to stick to 7.5?

  • http://www.kerdsri.com admin

Yeah, you can go back to 7.7 but DON’T UPDATE TO 2.0 YET.

  • http://eugenewilliams.blogspot.com Eugene

So, will someone be posting here an announcement concerning the successful 2.0 jailbreak?

got iTunes 7.5 but when I try to download the 1.4 firmware and open the folder it should be in it just shows a bunch of dmg files and not the ispw file that looks like a Lego with the iTunes symbol. Somebody help so I can get my old iPhone back!!

  • http://www.kerdsri.com admin

Don’t use Safari to download firmware because Safari always unzip ispw file.

    Use Firefox instead.
